ISES 2009: Calgary

The inaugural International Student Energy Summit took place in Canada’s energy capital Calgary, Alberta from June 11-13, 2009. The event brought together 350 students from over 30 countries to learn from world-renowned experts and discuss prominent energy issues. ISES 2009 created a network of students inspired to improve the world’s energy systems and create a sustainable future.

Highlights of the 2009 event include:

  • Keynote speeches from Jeremy Rifkin, Michael Klare, David Keith and Vicente Fox
  • “Future of Energy” panel discussion between leaders of today and tomorrow
  • Interactive case competition and parliamentary-style debate
  • Social events including line dancing lessons and country night

ISES 2009 was conceptualized and planned by a group of 50 students from the University of Calgary led by Kali Taylor and Janice Tran. The event was hosted by the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy out of the University of Calgary. The event was also supported by a close family of corporate, academic and government partners.

ISES 2011: Vancouver

The second International Student Energy Summit took place in Vancouver, Canada from June 9-11, 2011. There were approximately 400 students from 35 countries in attendance who saw speakers, sponsors and attendees come together to share knowledge and exchange ideas on the future of energy.

Highlights of the 2011 event include:

  • A special interview by Peter Mansbridge, Chief Correspondent, CBC News, with Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Nobel Peace Prize recipient
  • A research presentation from a diverse group of students from each major global region on the 10 “Unsolvable” Energy Problems
  • An in depth distributed energy challenge that spanned the length of the conference 

The event received overwhelming positive feedback and support from its speakers, sponsors and attendees. ISES attendees have commended Student Energy on the program, the execution, and the overall quality of this event. ISES 2011 would not have been possible without a dedicated planning team of University of British Columbia students led by Rosie Pidcock and Emily Brown. The event was hosted by the UBC Sustainability Initiative.

ISES 2013: Trondheim

The third ISES occurred in Trondheim from June 13th-15th, 2013. Hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, this event brought over 500 students from 64 countries to learn, share knowledge, and exchange ideas.

Highlights of the 2013 event include:

  • Keynote speeches from Connie Hedegaard, Hans Blix, and John Gummer
  • Statkraft’s case competition that challenged selected students to come up with sustainable energy solutions for the year 2050
  • Informative and interactive sessions such as Energy for all Panel and Changemaker’s Panel
  • A Discussion Panel about extraction of the massive petroleum resources in the Arctic
  • Summarizing “The Transition Towards a Sustainable Energy Future” in more sessions

Led by Chair, Alexander Hanssen and a dedicated team from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the event was a great success. ISES 2013 received overwhelming positive feedback and support from its speakers, sponsors and attendees.
